There is no surprise in this. The very rich did precisely the same thing during the Great Depression. That is why Franklin Delano Roosevelt told them to start circulating it or he would print so much money that it would make their wealth worthless.
When cash piles up in savings accounts, off shore investments, and dormant investments that do not feed the economy like art or gold, the economy stagnates. It did in the thirties and it is the same situation today.
Unfortunately the current administration, though Democratic, doesn't have the blanket authority that FDR had with the War Powers Act in force going into WWII. He used the government resources to create jobs to jump start the economy with programs such as the CCC and the WPA. For the most part these were make work projects to get people jobs and start money circulating again. It was kind of like a bail out for the common middle class working man.
Too bad we cannot get a suitable and competent independent candidate for president and stuff the Congress with an independent majority in both houses. Then we might see some changes. When our entire government is staffed with people who care more about doing a good job and making decisions that are in the best interest of the people rather than their own political interests then the lobbyists, special interest groups, and PAC committees could go begging because no one would be listening to them.
Mind you I have no illusions that such a thing could ever happen in reality. Our present corrupt system is too well ingrained and the participants are too well rooted to ever be ousted without massive cooperation in the ballot boxes. We are too divided and are therefore conquered by our own choices. Too bad really and too late to fix it.
