Well, here we go again. Every time one of these kinds of articles pops up about gasoline prices declining ours invariably goes up twenty to fifty cents a gallon here in Southern Indiana and North Central Kentucky.
I can go in any direction for about fifty miles or so and find gasoline much cheaper than here locally. I don't know why that is but it sure feels like we are being gouged by our local distributors. When asked they of course always have some lame excuse like we are changing to winter blend or some such nonsense. There is always some bogus explanation and these fools really think that the public buys them. Most just grumble and pay the price because we have to go to work and the grocery.
Seriously someone needs to instigate some kind of an investigation. I would but I haven't the slightest idea of how to go about that. Our local politicians tend to be bought and sold like most other corrupt good ole boy politicians so that is like shouting down a rabbit hole.
Around here we haven't seen gasoline prices below three dollars in many years and to be honest I don't think we ever will unless someone jerks a knot in the tails of our local distributors. My sons live in another large city East of my location and they typically pay anywhere from ten to twenty cents a gallon less than I do here and I get the Kroger discount. That is sad.
On my most recent visit to my son's home I filled up at their local Kroger and used my twenty cent a gallon discount because of my two hundred gas points. I paid $3.199 a gallon. When I came home that same evening and passed my usual Kroger gas station their sign price was $3.799 a gallon. I don't understand a forty cent a gallon difference in just 120 miles difference in distance.
Now mind you I am not specifically singling out Kroger because all of the stations in our area charge virtually the same amount. It never varies more than a few cents anywhere in the city but just forty or fifty miles in any direction and you realize an immediate drop in price. I just doesn't look or feel right to me. Price fixing is illegal I though but apparently not because our local distributors seem to be having a field day here.
